After successful performances in Romeo and Juliet, La Traviata, and Lucia di Lammermoor, Nadine Sierra returns to the Metropolitan Opera in the leading role of Bellini’s touching love story.
This operatic gem is a landmark in vocal artistry. The title role of the sleepwalking girl was written for the greatest diva of her time, Giuditta Pasta. It demands a rare combination of innocence, charm, and astonishing vocal virtuosity. Deeper than a comedy, yet by no means a tragedy, La Sonnambula reaches its resolution through touching character development rather than plot twists or farce. The world premiere of La Sonnambula took place at Teatro Carcano in Milan in 1831.
Director Rolando Villazón, who has transitioned from a successful tenor career to a brilliant directing career, sets the opera in its original environment—the Swiss Alps—and explores the psychological dimensions of its dreamlike story. Riccardo Frizza is one of the most luminous and successful opera conductors in the history of the Metropolitan Opera.
