Set during the French Revolution, Giordano’s epic tragedy follows the idealistic poet Andrea Chénier, sung by Piotr Beczała. He reunites with Sonya Yoncheva, who plays his beloved Maddalena.

Giordano’s great tragedy combines the verismo style’s focus on the raw emotions of everyday life with the brilliance of historical grand opera. The marriage of music and text is exemplary.

WhileAndrea Chénier demands superb performances from his lead actors to succeed, the central characters are also set within a wider musical framework that reinforces the impressive solo performances rather than relying on them alone. Andrea Chénier had his world premiere at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1896.

Baritone Igor Golovatenko plays Carlo Gérard, a political activist who decides their fate. The Met’s chief guest Daniele Rustioni conducts this dramatic performance.
