Pekka Erkkilä had a long and distinguished career at Outokumpu. He joined the company in 1983 and worked, among other things, as Director of Technology until 2017. In the early 2000s, Pekka Erkkilä was responsible, among other things, for the major investment at the Tornio steel mill, which doubled production. During the lecture, he will talk about the history of the steel mill and its importance for the whole of Outokumpu.

The lecture will be held in Finnish, only on the museum premises and will not be streamed.

About the exhibition

Outokumpu’s Tornio steel mill celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Kemi-Tornio plant is the world’s largest integrated stainless steel production facility and one of Europe’s largest recycling clusters.

The aim of the exhibition “50 years of stainless steel from Tornio” is to present the history of the steelworks and the port of Röyttä through photographs, and to highlight the changes that have taken place in safety and processes over 50 years. The older photographs in the exhibition are from the 1970s and 1980s, while the new pictures are from 2026.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Tornedal Museum and the Outokumpu factory in Tornio. The new photographs were taken by photographer Nina Susi.
