Welcome to the border between Finland and Sweden – a shared destination in two countries! Find out how to get to HaparandaTornio by train, bus, car, plane or bicycle from Finland and Sweden, including local transport and travel tips.
HaparandaTornio is located at the northern end of the Bothnian Bay, with excellent transport connections. You can easily reach us by train, bus, car or plane. The twin city is now directly accessible by train from both Finland and Sweden.
Please remember the time difference: Finland is one hour ahead of Sweden. The border runs through the heart of the city, so be sure to take the time difference into account, especially when planning onward connections.
Train connections
From Finland – directly to Tornio and Haparanda
You can now travel directly by train to HaparandaTornio from the Finnish rail network. VR operates daily services on the route Oulu – Kemi – Tornio East – Tornio – Haparanda.
Oulu offers convenient onward connections to Helsinki and other destinations across Finland.
Tornio city centre railway station is located at Jokivarrentie 11, close to the city centre. VR trains also stop at Tornio East before continuing across the border to Haparanda railway station.

From Sweden – by Norrtåg to Haparanda
From Sweden, Norrtåg operates train services to Haparanda on the route Luleå – Boden – Kalix – Haparanda.
From Haparanda station, you can continue by VR train to Tornio, Kemi and Oulu. Via Boden and Luleå, there are onward connections to other parts of Sweden and further towards Stockholm and the rest of Europe. Norrtåg operates several daily services on the Haparanda–Luleå route.
Please note the time difference when travelling by train: departure and arrival times are shown in local time. Haparanda is one hour behind Tornio.
Bus connections
There are bus connections to HaparandaTornio from both Finland and Sweden.
Timetables and tickets for long-distance and regional buses in Finland are available through Matkahuolto.

On the Swedish side, bus services are operated by Länstrafiken Norrbotten. When searching for your journey, use Haparanda Travel Centre or your preferred bus stop in Haparanda as your departure point or destination.
Local public transport
Kaupunkilinja operates on weekdays in the main urban areas of Tornio. In Haparanda, the corresponding local bus service is Ringlinjen, which also operates on weekdays.
You can transfer between the Tornio and Haparanda city buses at TornioHaparanda Travel Centre and at Rajalla På Gränsen shopping centre. Kaupunkilinja does not operate during school holidays.
By car
Tornio-Haparanda is located at the junction of the E4 and E8 roads on the border between Finland and Sweden.
The area is easy to reach by car from Finland, Sweden and Norway. Crossing the border between the city centres of Tornio and Haparanda takes just a few minutes.
Please remember that Finland and Sweden are in different time zones and use different currencies. Payment cards are, however, widely accepted throughout the area.

Flight connections
HaparandaTornio is located close to several airports. The nearest airport is Kemi-Tornio Airport in Kemi. From the airport, you can travel to HaparandaTornio by airport taxi, which must be booked in advance.
The airports in Oulu, Rovaniemi and Luleå in Sweden are located approximately 130 kilometres from HaparandaTornio. Information about airlines and routes can be found on the airports’ own websites.
From Oulu and Rovaniemi, you can continue to HaparandaTornio by train or bus. From Luleå, you can conveniently reach HaparandaTornio by either bus or train.
By bicycle
Getting around HaparandaTornio by bicycle is easy, and there is a wide variety of routes to choose from – whether you want to explore the city centres, cycle along the river or head out into the archipelago.
Fatbikes can be rented from Nordic Safaris.

From Luleå: We recommend using smaller roads instead of the E4. On the Swedish side, Road 99 coming from the north is suitable for cycling.
