Risto Nordell, cultural and music journalist, presenter, lecturer, non-fiction writer.

Risto (b.1959) is one of Finland’s most respected music journalists, a versatile journalist and presenter who combines the pleasures of music, culture, spirituality and secular life in a unique way.

Risto holds a Master’s degree in music from the Sibelius Academy, majoring in vocal performance. He completed the A-course in singing under the guidance of Sauli Tiilikainen. His other teachers have included Professor Matti Lehtinen and British singer Neil Mackie, who ignited in Risto a lifelong love of Renaissance and Baroque music. Fortunately for the public, however, Risto stopped performing in public long ago, having previously sung as a soloist in church music and as an extra chorus for the Finnish National Opera.

While still a student, Risto started working as a music journalist. He wrote about music for magazines such as Helsingin Sanomat, Rondo, Suomen Kuvalehti, Classica, Kirkko ja Kaupunki and Kotiliesi.

Risto started working as a music and culture editor for Yle in the autumn of 1988. During his long career, he has edited numerous radio programmes, including Pajatso, Luostarin puutarhassa and Kohtauspaikka. Risto’s programmes combine classical music and life-affirming stories, taking listeners from taverns to churches and from fishing lakes to the world of literature. Risto’s best-known programme is Risto’s Choice, which he has been running for 18 years. In it, he presents classical music and combines it with stories from his own everyday life, culture and spirituality. Risto’s Choice is known for its warm and peaceful atmosphere.

Risto has received many awards for his work, including the KOURA Grand Prize (in the Monastery Garden) and the Recognition Award (Risto’s Choice). In 2015, Risto was awarded the Culture Prize of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and the Christian Media Work of the Year Award.

In his free time, Risto enjoys fishing, sailing and sourdough baking. Risto’s debut book, Risto’s Choice – the best possible music for a year’s journey, was published in 2018 (Kirjapaja Helsinki).
